In a major relief to the poor patients, the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) here has started the super speciality facility in Urology. The Out Patient Department (OPD) of Urology would function twice a week in the hospital while the open surgery of kidney ailments would also be done in the hospital. The medical college administration is also planning to start laparoscopic surgery and kidney transplant operations in the hospital.
The principal of the GDMC, Dr Ashutosh Sayana said that in the last six years the infrastructure facilities in the hospital have increased and along with them the life support system has improved manyfolds. He said that the hospital is now being developed as a super speciality centre so that the treatment of all serious diseases is available under one roof. Dr Sayana said that in today’s times many people are suffering from the diseases of kidney, prostate and urine. He said that initially patients seek treatment from the normal doctors but most of them don’t get a permanent solution to their illness.
The GDMC principal added that the services of urologists in the government hospitals of Garhwal including Dehradun are not available due to which the patients are forced to visit private hospitals where they spend a lot of money. He said that with GDMC starting the facility of urology the poor patients would now be treated at concessional rates and free treatment would be done under the Ayushman scheme. Dr Sayana said that Dr Manoj Vishwas who has worked in many prominent institutions including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh has joined the GDMC as urologist.
He claimed that laparoscopic surgery would commence in the hospital within six months and the GDMC has set a target to conduct kidney transplant operation in one year.
