Sounding perturbed over the grotesque incident of a man murdering a woman and then raping her body in inebriated condition that has just happened in Dehradun, the mental health experts opined that the man who had committed such a heinous crime might be suffering from a serious mental ailment like Necrophilia. They warned the people against mixing up with strangers intimately.
Talking to The Pioneer, a Dehradun-based neuropsychologist Dr Sona Kaushal Gupta said that such a horrific crime happening in this State has shaken them all. “It has been reported that the man committed the crime in a drunken state. Excessive alcohol consumption might have affected his brain, numbing his conscience. In this state, one can commit such crimes as he ceases to remain a human being. Or else, the man has been suffering from a grave mental disorder that is known as Necrophilia in psychiatry which signifies propensity towards sexual acts with corpses,” she said.
She further said that Necrophilia is supposed to bud from early childhood development, from childhood trauma, childhood abuse and the like. “Though a Necrophilic person may be identified we should refrain from mixing up too much with strangers,” she warned.
While commenting on the despicable crime, another clinical psychologist Dr Mukul Sharma said that consuming alcohol too much affects the process of thinking. “The person in that state fails to distinguish the right from the wrong. The values are blurred; the conscience ceases to act. However, we may assume that it is not just an alcohol-related crime. The person who has committed such an abominable crime may be a patient of Necrophilia. It may be traced to some childhood trauma or strong abhorrence for women budding in childhood,” he said.
Asked whether such patients of mental disorder can be identified and segregated from society, he answered in the negative, saying that they themselves may be unaware of such tendencies lurking in them. “Thus, to be safe, we should keep away from strangers,” he advised.
