KIWKL to be held in Doon on October 1

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will organise the Khelo India Women Kickboxing League (KIWKL) in Dehradun on October 1st. The league will be organised in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Amateur Kickboxing Association (UAKA) at Parade Ground. The president of UAKA, Arvind Kumar Kotnala informed that the KIWKL aims to enhance the skills and capabilities of women. Registration for the KIWKL has already commenced and will conclude on September 31. Individuals interested in participating can register themselves through the Hello India national portal to become part of the league, he added.

He further informed that females aged 10 and above are eligible to participate in the league. The main objective of this league is to promote the sport, which holds unique and worldwide recognition. In addition, it aims to inspire girls and women, and instill in them the importance of self-defense through sports, he said.

Commenting on the popularity of kickboxing, Kotnala said, “The popularity of kickboxing among young individuals has surged in comparison to past years. Recently, a national kickboxing championship took place in Jharkhand, attracting the participation of skilled athletes from various State. The athletes from Uttarakhand had achieved outstanding results, securing a total of 19 medals in various categories in the championship.”

Kotnala further stated that the athletes who won in the Jharkhand championship were selected for the world kickboxing championship which is to be held in November at Portugal. To ensure the development and training of aspiring youths interested in kickboxing, the UAKA has a team of 14 expert trainers, he averred.
