The labour department has launched the first phase of making and installing information and educational banners on child labour for Dehradun district with the objective of eradicating child labour. Informing this, the assistant labour commissioner of Dehradun Deepak Kumar said on Wednesday that in accordance with the directives of the district magistrate Savin Bansal to eliminate child labour in Dehradun, his department has taken proactive measures.
Not long ago, a campaign was launched in Dehradun to spot and rescue children involved in labour, specifically on Fridays and Saturdays. The campaign is structured to unfold in three stages: raising awareness, enforcing regulations and providing rehabilitation.
“A significant number of children, employers and parents are found uninformed that engaging children in labour is not allowed by law. Hence, we launched the three-phase campaign, meant to make the children and their parents aware of the causes and consequences of child labour,” he said.
He further said that under the ongoing campaign, one child had been rescued in Dehradun district last Saturday with the assistance of Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA). The child was later sent to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
“Furthermore, we are launching the banner campaign with the same objective. Banners and stickers have been made and these contain warnings, educational messages and information on the provisions of actions to be taken against those who are found on the wrong side of child labour laws. The department is determined to root out child labour from the district with the cooperation of various departments and BBA,” he said.
These banners would be installed at shops, offices and other workplaces. Any person to be found defying the directive on child labour will have to cough up a fine of Rs 10,000.
To recall, a recent campaign to spot and rescue children engaged in labour has resulted in the successful rescue of six, including three adolescents.
