Following the direction of district magistrate Savin Bansal, the Labour department has geared up to eradicate child labour in the Dehradun district. The DM has recently instructed the linear departments to stop child labour and child beggary in Dehradun, emphasising the importance of connecting these children to education. The officials concerned are taking steps to achieve this aim. Informing about this, assistant labour commissioner of Dehradun district, Deepak Kumar said that a campaign has been started in Dehradun to identify and rescue children engaged in child labour, focusing particularly on Fridays and Saturdays. The campaign is slated to be carried out in three phases- awareness, enforcement and rehabilitation. Many children, employers and parents have been observed to be unaware of child labour. Considering this, the authorities have decided to launch a campaign in three phases for educating them about the causes and effects of child labour. Kumar further said that as part of this campaign, six children were recently rescued, including three adolescents. Following their rescue, they were sent to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). He added that as part of the campaign, efforts are underway to integrate the rescued children into the education system and government schemes. He urged employers, shopkeepers and others to display child labour banners at their establishments. Failure to comply with this directive will result in the Labour department issuing a Rs 10,000 fine, he said.
Kumar further stated that the district task force is collaborating with the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) to eradicate child labour from the city. The State coordinator of BBA, Suresh Uniyal told this correspondent that in compliance with the directions of the DM, they have intensified their watchfulness and joined forces with the district task force and the labour department to rescue children from engaging in child labour. He further stated that BBA is assisting the concerned officials in identifying locations where child labour is most prevalent.
