The Labour department is all set to intensify its enforcement of the child labour awareness initiative starting from February 11 in commercial establishments and factories among others across Dehradun district.
Notably, the district magistrate Savin Bansal had directed the district Health officials to be more pro-active in enforcing the child labour-free zones.
The assistant labour commissioner Deepak Kumar said that the department has been diligently working to eliminate child labour in the district as swiftly as possible. “To take things further, the department convenes meetings at regular intervals. Recently, during one such meeting, the decision was taken to pump more vigour in the child labour awareness campaign in Dehradun district to stamp out the child labour menace,” he added.
As part of this initiative, it has been made mandatory for large outlets, factories and commercial establishments to put up banners meant to raise awareness about child labour.
He further said that this initiative would officially commence on February 11. “During this period, inspectors from the department will visit commercial establishments and factories among others. In the first two days of the initiative, inspectors will inform employers and owners about the requirement to install banners as stipulated by the regulations. The next day, inspections will begin to verify compliance with the banner installation directive. Non-compliance may result in a fine of Rs 10, 000,” he said.
He said that the results of this initiative would be visible in a week. “The primary aim of the campaign is to educate individuals about the legal prohibitions on child labour and the appropriate age restrictions. This will moreover prevent the employers from making excuses should they be caught violating the regulations in future,” Kumar said.
He made it clear that the department is going to adopt a stricter stance vis-à-vis the child labour rule implementation. “The children being employed are under-paid and they are exploited in full. We are determined to put an end to this practice in the district,” he affirmed
