Lack of snow causing drop in tourist numbers

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Jyotirmath

The number of tourists arriving to the mountain appears to be dropping gradually due to the delay in snowfall. A considerable number of tourists had reached Auli and other parts of Chamoli district for Christmas and New Year celebrations. However, the lack of snow caused disappointment to most of the visitors.

With December having ended and the first week of January about to end, there has not been snowfall in the high altitude mountainous regions so far, due to which the mountains are bereft of snow. A considerable number of people arrive in this area to enjoy snowfall and snow during the winter but the lack of snow is causing disappointment among the visitors.

Those in the tourism and related business point out that the delay in snowfall is now causing a gradual drop in the number of tourists visiting this region. Deepak Shah, who is in the hotel business in Auli, said that there has been a considerable drop in tourist numbers after the New Year celebrations.

It is pertinent to mention here that the State government is focusing on encouraging winter tourism and pilgrimage to the winter abodes of the Char Dham deities. However, the delay in snowfall has affected the arrival of those tourists who especially visit the Himalayan State to enjoy snowfall and snow clad mountains.
