The heat wave conditions did not stand in the way of devotion and religious fervour as lakhs of people took ritual dips in the Ganga in Haridwar on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra on Sunday. However, it being the weekend, the large number of tourists arriving along with the devotees resulted in major traffic congestion in the city and roads leading in and out of it. The police had prepared a special plan for the occasion but had to struggle to manage the traffic.
People had started arriving on the Ganga Ghats during the wee hours and by late afternoon more than nine lakh people had bathed in the holy river with the number expected to rise substantially by evening. The police had divided the entire Mela area into three super zones, 10 zones and 26 sectors. Heavy police force was also deployed to control the crowds and manage the traffic. A special traffic plan had also been put into place. However, the lakhs of pilgrims and tourists arriving in Haridwar or passing through it for other destinations resulted in major traffic congestion which lasted for hours in Haridwar.
