Land dispute between villages turns violent in Haridwar

An old land dispute Sherpur Bela and Madabela villages in Laksar area of Haridwar district took a violent turn on Wednesday.  An altercation which started on sowing of wheat escalated with both sides engaging in heavy stone pelting on one another. A vehicle of Police was also damaged in the incident.  

On receiving the information, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh and SP Rural, Swapan Kishore rushed to the spot with a police force.  On the instructions of the SSP, the Khanpur police have registered an FIR against several people who pelted stones. 

Sherpur and Madabela were under one village panchayat earlier but after delimitation both the  panchayats were separated. The root of the dispute is a eight hectares of land near river Ganga adjacent to the boundary of both the gram Panchayats. 

SDM Gopal Ram said that being a government land, no party has any right to occupy or sow crops on it.  “There has been a fight and stone pelting between the two sides regarding the sowing of wheat crop here’’ he said. 

The SSP Singh said that there has been a fight between two parties regarding the land of the village society. He said that police force has been deployed in the village to avoid further disputes between the two sides.
