Landslide treatment work poses threat to people on Thandi Sadak
Monday, 22 JULY 2024 | PNS | NAINITAL
Treatment is underway to tackle the landslide near the Pashan Devi Mandir on the Thandi Sadak in Nainital. However, the locals point out that the authorities have completely ignored the safety of the people while undertaking the treatment work. The treatment is taking place above on the mountain while several people pass daily on the Thandi Sadak below. Soil and rocks are falling on the route from above but nothing has been done to restrict the movement of the people on this path. This is posing a danger to the people who are walking on the Thandi Sadak.
Sheets of metal have been erected on the shore of the Naini lake to prevent debris from entering the lake at this point. However, rain and resulting rise in the level of water in the lake has submerged these sheets. The contractor concerned had been penalised in the past after debris had ended up in the lake though there is no strong protection wall along the lake. Locals point out that even the Thandi Sadak may be at risk if the level of the lake rises further. Irrigation department assistant engineer DD Sati said that the contractor will be directed to display a board warning the public on Thandi Sadak. Measures will also be taken to prevent the debris from falling in the lake, he added.
