The leader of opposition (LoP) in the Vidhan Sabha, Yashpal Arya has said that the Bharatiya Janata Party government has foisted the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on the people of Uttarakhand in an attempt to divert attention from the demand for land laws.
Arya told The Pioneer that the State government has given legitimacy to live-in relationships which is against the culture of the State and an insult to the religious and cultural tradition of Uttarakhand. He said that no religion of the country gives legitimacy to such a relationship.
Arya expressed apprehension that after implementation of UCC the live-in relationships will get encouragement in the State. He added that while divorce has been made difficult for all religions in UCC but under the live-in relationships partners can end their relationship easily.
