In latest news from Dehradun, with the relentless rain spell still triggering disasters across Uttarakhand, Lelta village in Kalsi block in Dehradun district experienced land subsidence. Land subsidence happened in this village just a few days after it occurred in Jakhan, Lakhwar and Ramkholi villages in the same block. As a result, deep fissures have emerged in more than ten houses in Lelta village. Along with this, fissures keep widening in roads and agricultural fields. The panic-stricken villagers said that the houses are caving in because the village is situated on the unstable hill slope. They further said that even when it drizzled they had to spend sleepless nights, fearing that land subsidence would destroy not just their homes but their farm fields and orchards. They demanded the administration to take prompt actions to stop recurrence of land subsidence. They said that such cave-ins started in 2019 and the cracks kept widening since then. This year, due to the torrential showers, cracks have appeared in houses and these are widening too. Sharing the people’s growing fear, the village pradhan Ajay Singh Chauhan said that three rural roads have cave in. Notably, around 80 families are residing in Lelta village situated about 34kms away from the block headquarters at Kalsi.
