Local residents of Miyanwala object to name change

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun
Many local residents of the Miyanwala area expressed their objections to the recent name change of the area. Addressing the media, local resident Mahendra Butola stated that the State government has changed the name of Miyanwala, which is under the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun, to Ramjiwala.
He emphasised that the government should first understand the history of Miyanwala before considering a name change, noting that 99 per cent of the people living in the area are Hindus. “No representatives from the government consulted us, nor did we approach them regarding changing the name,” he said.
Butola said that when Shri Guru Ram Rai arrived in 1676, Miyanwala already existed; it had been established before that time, with Raja Pradeep Shah ruling the area in 1772.
He added that if the government does not reverse the decision to change the name of the area, they will peacefully stage protests and demonstrations and they are prepared to take any necessary actions.
Notably, in protest against the name change, local residents of the said area also submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through the district magistrate.
