Many local residents have been observed in the city’s major markets, including Paltan Bazaar and Hanuman Chowk, in preparation for the Mahashivratri celebration, which will take place on February 26 this year. In addition to the bustling markets, temples have also been decorated for the occasion. Notably, Mahashivratri is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the waxing phase of the lunar month of Phalguna. As part of the celebration, individuals often pay tribute to Lord Shiva through fasting and the offering of Prasad.
The owner of a Pooja shop Vibhu Pandey said that with only one day remaining for Mahashivratri, he has observed a significant increase in the number of devotees visiting his shop to purchase Pooja supplies. He said that many devotees were buying Kalash to offer milk and water to the Shivling. Additionally, there is a rising demand for Shiv idols for home Pooja rituals.
A local resident, Yashika Chanchal said, “Every year, my husband and I fast together on Mahashivratri. In preparation, I have completed my shopping for both the Pooja and the fast. I have purchased fruits such as Ber, bananas and apples, which I will present to Lord Shiva first thing in the morning of Mahashivratri.” Beyond the Pooja shops, temples are also being adorned with flowers and lights. Further, many individuals flocked to fruit vendors to make their purchases.
In light of this, fruit vendor Raju Hari stated that in anticipation of Mahashivratri, there is a notable increase in the demand for fruits, particularly Ber, which is regarded as the favourite fruit to offer to Lord Shiva on this occasion. He said that he has been selling Ber at the price of Rs 80 per kilogramme. However, he said that on the day of Mahashivratri, the demand for Ber is expected to rise significantly among the local residents.
