Wednesday, 10 January 2024 | PNS | DEHARDUN

Several residents of Jhajra in Dehradun were evacuated and shifted to a safer location on Tuesday morning after some people complained of breathlessness caused by a chlorine gas leak. The police came to know about the leak at about 3 AM when some locals complained of having difficulty breathing. When the police team along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) reached the location with all safety gear, they found out chlorine gas leak to be the cause. The gas was leaking from a chlorine cylinder kept in an empty plot in the Jhajra area, said the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh. He said that the police evacuated and shifted people to a safer location and no casualty was reported till late evening. The joint team of NDRF, SDRF, the Fire Services and the police also started taking action for the safe disposal of the cylinder soon after getting the information.  Singh said that the police disposed of the chlorine gas cylinder by burying it deep in the ground. He said that the police have also filed a case against plot owner Deepak Gupta, currently residing in Agra and plot caretaker and Patelnagar resident Narendra Kumar for negligence in the chlorine gas leak case by leaving such cylinders in the open that could prove to be fatal to many on Tuesday. The police are investigating the matter and will act accordingly, Singh added.
