The locals of Nakronda area of Dehradun staged a protest on Monday at the district Collectorate against the proposed construction of a sewerage treatment plant (STP) in the area. According to the protestors, the government wants to build the plant in the thickly populated area of Nakronda which will make their daily life suffer. They have also alleged that the locals were tricked into giving their assent for the plant by the government.
According to a protestor Buddha Dev, “We already have to bear the stench in the area caused by a liquor plant set up in Kuanwala that lingers day and night. If this STP gets constructed near the residential area, how will the locals live there?”
He said that the locals were told that the plant will be set up away from the proposed area so they gave their nod to the project. However, he said, the government is working on setting up STP in the proposed area despite their several appeals. Locals said that they are not against the construction of the plant but just want the government to set it up one kilometre away from the proposed location. “There is vacant government land one kilometre away from the proposed location of STP that falls near the forest. The area is not densely populated and is ideal to set up the plant,” said another local Hema Devi. The locals informed that some employees from government agencies recently tried to start construction to set up STP in the area but they did not let them start the work. “Despite our consistent appeals, they are gearing up for the construction. We have also approached district administration and the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) but no action has been taken so far. If they commence the construction here, all locals will stage massive protests against the government,” said another local, Rajesh Pant.
