The locals are questioning the quality of work on the Sem Mukhem motor road in Dunda block of Uttarkashi district with the layer of tar wearing off in many patches about three months after a fresh layer was laid. The people are blaming the Public Works Department officials and the negligence of the contractor for this. This stretch is a part of the motor road from Devidhar to Singuni and Dungi on which asphaltisation was done in November last year. The locals state that the damaged condition of the road is causing inconvenience and poses an accident hazard. However, the officials are limited to giving assurances instead of taking concrete action, the locals alleged. The PWD executive engineer Rajneesh Saini said that patches have come off at some places on the road, which may possibly have been caused by moisture. He said that asphalt work will be done again on the road in March. However, the locals state that they are not content with the official assurances as the road would not have suffered damage so early if the quality of work and materials used had been upto standards.
The locals aver that this road in the Dunda block is just an example of the corruption and negligence which affects various roads and other construction works in different parts of the State. While crores of rupees are being spent on construction of roads and other development works, the authorities concerned are not laying the necessary focus on the quality of work and materials used. The authorities generally blame the weather for damage to construction works or assure of improvement in the near future, the locals said.
