Makar Sankranti signifies a transition in both astrological and earthly configurations. This occasion to be celebrated today holds significant importance in the Hindu faith, with traditional celebrations including the preparation of khichdi, as noted by various priests.
Priest Krishnand Jaguri said that Makar Sankranti is notable both astrologically and geographically. Astrologically, the sun’s shift contributes to changes in one’s fortune and other aspects associated with the zodiac signs. From the earthly aspect, Makar Sankranti is observed when the sun moves from the southern to the northern hemisphere. It is believed that following this transition, the duration of daylight increases. He further added that on this day, Hindus consider it auspicious to bathe in the Ganga River and prepare khichdi to invite prosperity into their homes.
Priest and Ganga Sabha secretary Ujjwal Pandit stated that Makar Sankranti is the festival that commemorates the sun’s transition into Capricorn. As the sun plays a very important role in everyone’s life and zodiac sign, people believe it is essential to take a bath in the Ganga river in Haridwar and offer Ganga water to Surya Devta. He added that this year, the crowd for Ganga Snan will be smaller in Haridwar, as the Mahakumbh is being held at Prayagraj. This day signifies the beginning of a series of auspicious days. In light of this, the period following Makar Sankranti is regarded as an ideal time for weddings. On this occasion, individuals often take the opportunity to donate food, grains and warm clothes to the underprivileged, he said.
Meanwhile, local residents in Dehradun were observed making last-minute preparations for Makar Sankranti. Local resident Hriday Bhatt said that he visited the market and purchased various Makar Sankranti kits from the stores, which included pulses, rice, ghee, spices and more. He plans to distribute these kits to temples, those in need and other individuals. Additionally, he traditionally showers Ganga Jal throughout his home on the morning of Makar Sankranti, a practice he intends to continue on the occasion this year.
“I have purchased items in preparation for the celebration of Makar Sankranti. On this day, preparing khichdi is considered auspicious. In light of this tradition, I will not only prepare khichdi but also distribute it among beggars,” said another local resident Kiran Dixit.
