Many local residents, especially those from the Punjabi community, celebrated the festival of Lohri with enthusiasm and religious fervour across the State on Monday. Lohri is observed nationwide by the Punjabi community on January 13 every year. The people celebrated the festival by lighting bonfires and offering popcorn, Revadi (sugar-coated sesame seeds) and peanuts into the fire as part of their pooja.

Lohri marks the harvest period for crops such as wheat, barley and sugarcane. It is a time for expressing gratitude to nature for the harvest and celebrating the agricultural community.

Local resident Harshmeet Singh said that this year they organised a Lohri function in their society. Society members also arranged a Lohri dinner featuring traditional Punjabi dishes, including Sarson da Saag and Makki di Roti. Before the dinner, they lit a bonfire, offered popcorn and peanuts to it and circumambulated to pray. This day holds significant importance in Punjabi culture, he said.

Another local resident, Reema Kohli, said that every year on Lohri, she spends the entire day preparing special food and desserts to celebrate the occasion. This year, she even gifted special Lohri hampers to her family and friends to make the celebration memorable. Many residents were observed celebrating Lohri with great enthusiasm. Additionally, the festival was celebrated at several Gurdwaras located in the city, where people gathered to partake in the festivities. Cultural programmes were also held at various places to mark the occasion.
