Minister Bahuguna takes meeting with officers of Animal Husbandry Dept to take stock of the situation
The arrival of the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle in the State has alarmed the Animal Husbandry department of Uttarakhand. The death of 35 cows in the Haridwar district in the last few days has occurred due to the LSD.
Hundreds of cows in Haridwar are said to be suffering from this disease which is spread by a virus. On Wednesday the Animal Husbandry minister Saurabh Bahuguna had a meeting with the officers of the department. In the meeting he directed the officers to focus on vaccination of the cattle and asked them to take necessary measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
It is worth mentioning here that LSD has wreaked havoc in the states of Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab so far where hundreds of cows have died from the disease. The disease is caused by the Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV) which is a member of the Poxviridae family. A virus of this family also causes monkeypox.
The symptoms of this disease include nasal discharge followed by a high fever which may last for about six to seven days. There is a decline in the milk output of the animal and it develops lumps of 10-50 millimetres in diameter. The limbs of the cattle also get swollen. In some cases lesions develop in the cornea of the eyes that can lead to blindness.
