Mahara demands high level inquiry in Police Lines incident

PNS | DEHRADUN

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has demanded a high level inquiry to investigate the November 4 incident that took place at Police lines, Dehradun. He said that the Police was responsible for the unsavory incident that occurred between youth Congress workers and journalists.

In a letter to the director general of police (DGP), Mahara the Police Line incident of December 4 occurred due to  the gross negligence of the police and administration.  He said that after the mass detention in the secretariat march, he and the youth Congress workers were taken to the police lines and were made to sit on the stairs. He said that the Congress workers and leaders were not told about the event being organised by the media personnel there.

The PCC president added that perhaps the journalists also had no knowledge of the detention of Congress workers. “In this misunderstanding, the journalists probably thought that we had come there to protest against them and in this commotion and misunderstanding, this incident happened, for which police officers and personnel posted there on duty are responsible,’’ he said.

Mahara said that though the incident occurred due to the negligence of the police personnel and misunderstanding, a deliberate conspiracy cannot be ruled out. The PCC president also raised questions on the absence of police personnel in the police lines ground.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Youth Congress workers entered into a verbal duel and scuffle with the mediapersons at Police lines ground on November 4. The PCC president has already expressed regret over the incident. On Saturday morning Mahara visited the Uttaranchal Press club and met its office bearers. He again expressed regret for the incident in the meeting.
