Maharaj’s absence from Tehri Lake festival; Cong fires salvo on govt
The absence of Tourism and culture minister Satpal maharaaz from the inaugural programme of Tehri Lake festival which was being organised by a department headed by him has given ammunition to the opposition Congress to attack the state BJP government. While chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat took part in the inaugural ceremony held on Tuesday, maharaaz decided to abstain from it citing the recent tragedy in Tapovan region of Chamoli district as a reason.
Taking a pot-shot at the government, former chief minister and general secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC), Harish Rawat said that the festival showcased contradictory views in the government. Rawat said that Satpal maharaaz decided not to participate in the event to pay homage to those who lost lives in the Tapovan tragedy even as CM Rawat is on an inauguration spree.
The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Pritam Singh said on Wednesday that the state government exhibited a high degree of insensitivity by organising Tehri Lake festival at the time when the rescue work in Tapovan tragedy is still going on. Attacking the government for being irresponsible, the PCC president said that such programmes could have been postponed since large scale loss of lives and property took place in the tragedy. Talking to the media persons at the Rajiv Bhawan, he said that the fact that the tourism minister abstained from the inaugural ceremony is enough to highlight the character of the government and its contradictions.
