In latest news from Doon, the State Panchayati Raj minister Satpal Maharaj, citing the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative and the recommendation of ‘one country-one election’ by the committee headed by the former President Ramnath Kovind, has directed the chief secretary Radha Raturi to explore the possibility of implementing the same in the upcoming panchayat elections in the State. He further said that some State governments have started implementation of the ‘One State-One Election’ policy.
Maharaj said that the three-tier panchayat elections are to be held in 2024-25 in 12 districts of the State except in Haridwar. “But we want these elections to be held in 2027 in all the 13 districts of the State in view of two years of the five- year term of the panchayats being wasted away due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.
