Maharaj inaugurates restored George Everest House

Sir George Everest House, which was in a dilapidated condition, will now emerge as a major tourist destination after being renovated. Tourists from around the world will come here in large numbers to see it. Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj said this after inaugurating the restored Everest House in Mussoorie on Tuesday.
He said that George Everest had spent a long time in Mussoorie. This surveyor and geographer from Wales had told the exact height and location of Everest for the first time. Therefore, on the recommendation of British surveyor Andrew Waugh, in the year 1865, this peak was named after him. Earlier this peak was known as Peak-15.
Maharaj said that the Everest House (residential complex) situated in the middle of 172 acres site near Mussoorie and the observatory situated about 50 meters away from it was constructed in 1832. He said that the renovation work of the building was started in January 2019 and the entire project cost Rs 23.69 crore.
He said that the project comprises house renovation, observatory renovation, outhouse and bachelor room renovation, approach road, trek route, open air theatre, construction of demonstration ground and four mobile toilets, five food vans and two tourist buses etc. Till now an amount of Rs 16.41 crore has been spent while the remaining work will be completed soon. The minister also flagged off a tourist van, released the book The Great Ark and planted a sapling on the occasion.
