Maharaj seeks white tiger cubs from MP
If the request made by the State’s Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj is met by the Madhya Pradesh government, the famous white tigers of Rewa could become a major attraction at a wildlife safari being planned by the State government. Maharaj has recently written to the Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan requesting him to provide a few white tiger cubs to Uttarakhand.
The minister has stated in his letter that Uttarakhand is an important state from the perspective of tourism with its hill stations, religious centres and national parks being a centre of attraction for tourists. He further states that the State government is considering the possibility of developing Sitabani area in Nainital district for the purpose of wildlife tourism. If Uttarakhand receives a few white tiger cubs from Madhya Pradesh, Sitabani could develop a separate identity for wildlife tourism in the future which would also enhance the tourism business here. Stating this, Maharaj has requested Chouhan to provide a few white tiger cubs to Uttarakhand for boosting wildlife tourism in the state.
It is pertinent to mention here that in 1951, the last king of Rewa got a white tiger cub captured after which the process of specifically breeding tigers to produce more of the white big cats was started. Madhya Pradesh has a white tiger safari apart from which these big cats are also housed in various zoos across India and abroad.
