Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj represented Uttarakhand at the three-day World Travel Market (WTM) in London which was joined by officials from India’s Ministry of Tourism on Thursday. The event, held to promote tourism on a global platform, showcased a robust Indian presence, including a special display of Uttarakhand’s attractions. During the WTM event, Maharaj, alongside India’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vikram Kumar Doraiswami, and director general of the Ministry of Tourism Mugdha Sinha inaugurated the Incredible India pavilion.
The pavilion featured multiple stalls highlighting the cultural and tourism heritage of various Indian states, drawing significant attention from visitors. Addressing attendees, Maharaj emphasised the importance of the UK as a major source market for Indian tourism, pointing out that it hosts the largest population of the Indian diaspora, approximately 1.9 million people. He stated that a delegation of around 50 stakeholders, including State tourism officials, inbound tour operators, airlines and hoteliers, were present to promote India’s vibrant tourism offerings. Their participation aligns with India’s strategic goal of bolstering domestic tourism and positioning the country as a premier global tourism destination.
Maharaj said that the WTM aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Chalo India initiative, which seeks to engage the Indian diaspora in promoting India’s tourism potential among non-Indian friends worldwide.
