The Mahashivratri festival was observed enthusiastically with devotion and fervour at temples across the State on Wednesday. Devotees in their hundreds gathered at the city’s temples to offer their prayers to Lord Shiva. They were seen standing in long queues outside the local temples waiting for their turn to pay their ritualistic obeisance to Lord Shiva.
The Tapekshwar Mahadev temple, situated in Garhi Cantt area of Dehradun, also saw a significant influx of devotees. They began thronging the temples around midnight.
A priest of a local temple Jagmohan Dimri said that the influx of devotees commenced quite early in the morning. “Most of them brought milk to perform the Abhishek ritual on the Shivling. On this occasion, devotees observe a fast as fast is considered auspicious for themselves and their families,” he added.
Another priest, Badri Nautiyal said that to commemorate the occasion, the temple committee has been distributing prasad among the devotees since morning. “In addition, we have arranged Bhajan Kirtan to make the Mahashivratri festival memorable,” he noted.
Many temples across the city have been decked up appropriately with flowers and various decorative items.
A devotee Manju Bhatt, found standing patiently in a long queue at a Shiva temple, shared that she would rise early on the day of Mahashivratri. “This year, the same happened. I do fasting on this day every year. I will distribute prasad among those present after my puja is over,” she added.
