The Uttarakhand Congress has said that the government should have brought the draft submitted by the expert committee on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) into the public domain.
The leader of opposition (LoP) in the Assembly Yashpal Arya said that the government should have made the committee’s report public so that it could be studied. He added that any comment on it will be made after going through the draft.
The chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni said that the UCC is on the concurrent list which means that both the Union and the State government can make any law on this. She said that when the Union government will make any law on the subject the laws made by the States will become void.
She said that all the personal laws would have to be abolished or amended before implementing UCC. Dasauni said that the Dhami government should reply as to how the Articles 12 to 35 which are basic framework of the constitution will get amended.
Dasauni said that it appears that the Union government is refraining from implementing the UCC. She said that the Uttarakhand government should ensure that the UCC is implemented after taking all the stakeholders into confidence and it should not be foisted.
