The Patelnagar police have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly causing injuries to his friend after a pistol accidentally went off while he was examining it, officials said. The arrested accused was identified as Gopal Sharma (28) and police recovered the pistol used in the crime. The incident took place in a rented flat during the early hours of June 19.

According to police, Hansraj Saini, a resident of Haridwar, was showing a recently purchased pistol to his friends Sharma and Shubham Agrawal. During the conversation, Sharma took the pistol to inspect it. While checking the weapon, the trigger was accidentally pressed and a bullet struck Saini near his nose. Police said that after the incident, the accused allegedly tried to cover up the matter. He reportedly advised the injured man to tell police that the bullet had been fired by an unknown person from a rooftop. Blood stains inside the room were cleaned and a false story was planned to mislead investigators.

A police team launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage from the area. During questioning after being apprehended the accused admitted that the pistol had gone off accidentally while he was handling it.

The pistol used in the incident was recovered from bushes near the rented accommodation where the accused had allegedly thrown it after the firing. Police said there was no valid licence for the weapon. The injured man was taken to Mahant Indresh Hospital for treatment and is recovering. Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
