A man drowned in a pond while attempting to escape from police following a tip-off about the illegal slaughter of a protected animal in the Gangahar area of Haridwar district on Sunday. The incident sparked anger among local villagers who staged a protest and initially prevented the police from retrieving the body. They also engaged in a verbal altercation with the police. According to the officials, a team from the Cow Protection Squad received information that a man on a motorcycle was transporting prohibited meat near Madhopur village in the Gangnahar Kotwali area at about 8 AM on Sunday. The police managed to calm the villagers and retrieved the man’s body from the pond. The officials said that when the police attempted to send the body for a post-mortem examination, the villagers initially refused to allow it but the body was finally taken away.
