Man held for firing in air to scare youths

A 41-year-old man was arrested by Dehradun police for allegedly firing in the air from his house balcony in Judge Colony on February 24 night.  The police received information of a shot having been fired through dial 112 at around 10:52 PM.  

As per the information, a police team with sub-inspector Deepak Dwivedi reached the spot at Indra Baba Marg and found some local people gathered there. The accused, identified as Vikas Gupta, was searched and a 32 bore pistol was recovered from him. Police also found six live cartridges in the magazine and one empty cartridge from the balcony.

During questioning, Gupta is said to have told police that he lived there on rent and fired one round in the air to scare some inebriated boys who were creating nuisance. Police said that he had admitted his mistake. Though the pistol was found to be licensed, such firing in the air violated the license conditions, police said. 

He was arrested under Section 30 of the Arms Act. The pistol, cartridges and license were seized and sealed by the police. Independent witnesses present at the spot also confirmed that they had heard and seen the firing. Further investigation is underway, police said.
