Man killed in chance encounter with jumbos

A man was killed in a chance encounter with a herd of elephants in the Terai east forest division on Sunday. The incident which occurred in Kilpura western compartment resulted in the man losing his life on the spot. The police and forest department personnel reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. The body was sent for post mortem examination. According to local officials, the man killed by the elephants was identified as 55-year old Ummed Singh who was a resident of Chatiya Farm in Khatima, Udham Singh Nagar.
The Kilpura forest range officer Jeevan Chandra Upreti informed that Singh had gone to the jungle for collecting firewood and fodder in the morning when he came across a herd of elephants. He is believed to have been trampled by a pachyderm which resulted in broken ribs and some wounds on his back. The police and forest department personnel sent his body for post mortem to the civil hospital in Khatima. The forest department team also met the bereaved family. The officials stated that the family will be provided the compensation amount soon as per the official procedure.
