A 20-year-old man was shot dead while asleep in Haridwar’s Kankhal area on Monday morning. Three people were allegedly involved in this murder out of which, the main accused was arrested within about four hours of the murder with the help of footage from the CCTV camera installed nearby, said Haridwar’s senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh. He said that the senior police officials along with teams reached the spot after getting information about the murder. The culprits had shot the victim in his head around 6 AM when he was reportedly sleeping on a bench in Kankhal’s Hathipul Kotwali area. The police came to know from the footage of a CCTV camera installed in the area that three people were involved in the murder and fled soon after shooting the victim. The SSP said that the police started the investigation and sent the body for post mortem after completing the procedure at the crime scene. After analysing the CCTV footage, the police identified the main accused Harshit Chadda and arrested him around noon. He said that the police were questioning Chadda about his absconding accomplices and the reason for committing the murder at a public place. He claimed that 10 cases were registered against the deceased in several police stations under charges like attempt to murder and Goonda Act as revealed during the investigation. The deceased and arrested accused both belong to Kankhal and it appears that Chadda killed him due to a personal grudge. He said that the police are trying to figure out the cause of the murder and how the remaining culprits can be nabbed soon. “The teams have been formed that are investigating various aspects of the case. They have gathered some valuable information during the investigation and will arrest the remaining culprits soon,” said Singh.
