The Dehradun police arrested a man on Sunday for allegedly threatening doctors, nurses and security personnel in the emergency ward of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital on Friday, officials said. The accused was carrying a cleaver and allegedly raised a ruckus in the emergency ward. Doctors had claimed that the police arrived late despite a police chowki being located inside the emergency ward at GDMC Hospital.

The accused, identified as Raunak Malhotra, allegedly created panic inside the hospital and disrupted government work following a dispute involving his younger brother, police said. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Pramendra Singh Dobal said that Malhotra had previously been involved in several criminal cases, including robbery, attempt to murder and offences under the Arms Act. Five cases dating from 2016 to 2025 are listed in his criminal record.

According to the police, the incident took place after Malhotra’s younger brother had an argument with some people at the hospital. After learning about the dispute, Malhotra allegedly reached the hospital carrying an illegal cleaver while under the influence of alcohol. He then threatened doctors and other people present at the hospital with the weapon.

Dr Shobha, medical superintendent of the Emergency Department at GDMC filed a complaint at Kotwali Nagar police station on October 9. The police registered a case under Sections 125, 131 and 221 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The police arrested Malhotra from the Kotwali Nagar area and recovered the cleaver allegedly used in the incident. Section 4/25 of the Arms Act was subsequently added to the case.
