Marriage registrations decline due to pandemic

Like the various aspects of life which were affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of registration for court marriages could not remain unaffected. The officials informed that owing to the fluctuating guidelines throughout the year considering the intensity of the covid contagion, weddings were not the priority of most of the people during the pandemic.
According to them, many couples who got married in a traditional way last year probably did not prioritise registration for court marriages due to the pandemic which possibly caused comparatively less registration in the district. Since all registrar offices across the district were also closed for about two months due to the lockdown last year, it might have also contributed to the declined registrations last year during the pandemic. As informed by the sub-registrar of the Dehradun district, Arvind Kumar, when the pandemic had not hit the country in the year 2019, about 8,000 marriages were registered in the Dehradun district from January to December. In the year 2020, about 5,870 marriages were registered across the district from January to December except for about two months when the State was under lockdown, informed Kumar.
Comparing the marriage registration of both years, over 2000 fewer marriages were registered in the year 2020. In the first three months of this year, the registrar offices across the district have already registered over 2,200 marriage registrations which are quite normal in the initial months of every year, as per the officials. According to them, the number of registration for court marriages seems promising so far but it could change considering the intensity of the Covid-19 pandemic in the district in the forthcoming weeks.
