Massive mandate in Maldives for pro-China party

The pro-China People’s National Congress led by the incumbent President Mohamed Muizzu won a landslide victory in the parliamentary election held on Sunday in Maldives. The PNC won 66 of the 86 seats the results of which were declared so far which marked a two-third majority for the party in the 93-member Parliament. Observers said that the Maldivian mandate clearly showed the people’s tilt towards China and away from the country’s long-time benefactor India.
Interestingly, only three women candidates out of a total of 41 got elected to the Parliament. The principal opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) which had secured a thumping majority in the previous election has been reduced to a humiliating tally of a dozen seats.
Though Maldives has remained a traditional tourist hotspot for the international tourists, the archipelago has recently become a geopolitical hotspot in the Indian Ocean with the global east-west shipping lanes passing through it.
