Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat has termed the incident involving the Health secretary and a doctor of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) as distressing. Talking to media persons on Friday, Rawat said that doctors discharge a very important task and should be respected by all. Regarding the inquiry ordered by the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami into the matter, the former CM said that instead of an inquiry the two persons involved in the incident should be called for a talk and the matter should be resolved in the interests of the state. “It should be made clear that such an incident should not be repeated in the future. Both the sides should not make this a matter of prestige,” he said.
Reiterating that doctors should be accorded due respect, he opined that there are no special VIP patients for doctors as for them all patients are VIPs. On being asked about whether the Health secretary was wrong in calling the busy doctor to his house to check his wife, Rawat said that this was a matter of normal courtesy. “The Health secretary is also on an important post and if his family is unwell, he may not be able to perform his duties properly. This should not be turned into a matter of dispute. However, all doctors should be respected and in this case the doctor should not be punished for her stand,” said the former CM.
