The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has claimed to make roads of the city garbage container- free by July this year. The sanitation team has a comprehensive plan to achieve this target including strengthening of door to door garbage collection service in all wards along with waste segregation, recycling and composting, said the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna. He said that the corporation has already removed big garbage containers and bins from over seven spots including four bins from near Silver City, two from near Anandam restaurant, and two each from Gangotri Vihar and near Canal Road and three from East Canal Road. He said that most of these garbage bins removed by MCD were causing traffic congestion in the respective areas besides causing sanitation issues. He said that overflowing garbage containers have become a nuisance in several locations across the city. Even if the corporation collects the garbage from these containers in time, people dump all kinds of garbage in and around it within a few hours.
Khanna said that some private establishments also allegedly dispose of huge amounts of garbage in and around such containers which should be disposed of by them following Solid Waste Management rules. Considering all these issues, MCD has decided to remove all dustbins from all wards in a phased manner, he said. On the question of whether the corporation will be able to ensure 100 per cent door to door collection to achieve its aim to make the city dustbin free as poor door to door service is one of the main sanitation concerns of the city, he said that MCD is working on a comprehensive plan to achieve it. “We are working on a comprehensive plan in a phased manner and strengthening door to door services is our main priority. The door to door services have certainly improved in several wards which will be made more efficient with each passing month. We have also started taking action against bulk waste generators of the city that produce at least over 50 per cent of wet organic waste of the city which can be easily disposed of at the source with simple methods,” said Khanna.
