The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has commenced the treatment of legacy waste accumulated in Sahastradhara Road trenching ground for about the past two decades. The ground has about 4.5 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste which is expected to be processed within 18 months, the Dehradun chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said. The corporation has appointed a Maharashtra-based company to carry out the disposal of the legacy waste. The Sahastradhara Road trenching ground was used as a garbage dumping ground for several years but it was shut down after the solid waste management and recycling plant in Sheeshambada was started in 2017. However, many people including locals continued to throw garbage there over the years. Khanna said that the said company has set up all the machinery required to process the legacy waste. The company will treat the garbage by separating it into three forms which will be compost, refuse derived fuel (RDF) and inert waste. The compost, RDF and inert will also be disposed of properly by the company without unnecessarily accumulating it in the plant. As per the agreement between the MCD and the company, the whole legacy waste should be treated within 18 months. This means the company will have to dispose of about 4.5 lakh metric tonnes of garbage till December 2025, Khanna said. He also added that this company has handled similar projects in several cities too and assured that it will complete the work in the stipulated time, he added.
