The Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ has asked the bulk waste generators of the city to adopt segregation and composting of the garbage in order to ensure proper disposal of most of the waste generated on a daily basis. Since March is an important month for the city to garner maximum scores under Swachch Survekshan 2022 (SS22) as the on-site inspection is scheduled to occur this month, the senior officials of the corporation are conducting and participating in several programmes to raise awareness among different sections of the local residents. The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) conducted a workshop on Wednesday in a Rajpur Road situated hotel to address the issue of unprocessed garbage generated through bulk waste generators like commercial bodies that include hotels, restaurants, malls and others. The mayor along with municipal commissioner Abhishek Ruhela also participated in the workshop to talk about the issue and the ways through which it can be disposed of within the premises of the bulk generators. ‘Gama’ said that each person can take a step towards improving sanitation conditions of the city by adopting a simple practice of segregating their waste into dry and wet waste and processing it accordingly. “Wet waste can be used to prepare compost while the dry waste can be kept separately for recycling. It is a simple task that can bring a significant change in the city. It will also help the city to become garbage free,” stated the mayor. He also presented some products prepared from the recycled materials in the workshop to display how garbage can be turned into useful items. The municipal commissioner also stated that bulk waste generators can make compost with simple methods and available resources. The corporation is raising awareness about segregation and composting of garbage across the city and it will also provide all possible assistance to those willing to adopt composting, he added.
