In yet another step to improve sanitation facilities in the Dehradun city, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has completed the construction of 10 smart toilets and their operation will commence by the end of this month. Moreover, the corporation is also planning to construct more such smart toilets in the city in about two months.
Informing this, the municipal health inspector Pushpa Rauthan stated that the work for the construction of these 10 smart toilets was under construction for months which finally got completed this month. She informed that like most of the public toilets under MCD, these smart toilets will also be operated under the Public Private Partnership (PPP). The procedure to handover the operation of these toilets to agencies is under process which will probably be completed within one week, informed Rauthan. Moreover, the officials also informed that there are 32 general toilets besides four smart toilets in Dehradun which were constructed last year.
Talking about the difference between a general toilet and a smart toilet, Rauthan stated that a general toilet normally has only urinals or toilet seats installed and soap to wash hands whereas a smart toilet has amenities like proper toilet seats with health faucet, soap and hand wash, towels and enough space to take bath. However, Rauthan also clarified that most of these facilities are provided as per the space available in an area in the city as not every toilet has enough area to accommodate all these facilities. Rauthan said that in addition to all these facilities, the smart toilets for women also have sanitary pad dispensers besides another dispenser to ensure proper disposal of the pads. She further informed that there are now 14 smart toilets in the city including the new toilets and soon, 30 new toilet seats will be installed in the city but the locations for them have not been finalised yet. Moreover, the nine smart toilets are constructed in the nine different locations like Kumhar Mandi, Tibetan Market, Seemadwar Road, Race Course Police Line and Ajabpur mini stadium and one smart toilet is constructed in MCD premises.
