The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Friday demolished 11 encroachments in the Barighat slum near the Canal Road area to remove encroachments constructed after 2016. These 11 encroachments included six shanties, three double-storey houses and two small structures, the additional municipal commissioner Gopal Ram Binwal said.
The corporation along with the police started demolishing the encroachments built after 2016 on May 27 as per the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The corporation identified a total of 525 encroachments out of which, 89 were on MCD land, 415 on the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) land and 12 on the Mussoorie Nagar Palika’s land. After reviewing objections raised by slum dwellers against demolition notices, the MCD initiated action against 69 encroachments on May 27. Binwal said that the corporation has removed all the marked encroachments on its land in Dehradun that were settled after 2016.
The MDDA officials said that they received around 300 objections against their notices for 415 encroachments with documents. They are expected to commence the anti-encroachment drive on Monday. According to the officials, the NGT has directed the corporation to present its report on the action taken against encroachments settled on the Rispana riverbed by June 30.
