MCD garbage vehicles to make more trips ahead of Deepawali

Thursday, 09 November 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Considering the expected rise in garbage generation due to household cleaning work, wrapping and unwrapping of gift packages ahead of Deepawali, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will increase the number of trips its vehicles make to collect garbage in the city from Thursday.

These visits will be increased by 30 per cent mainly in areas with commercial establishments as packaging work increases there more during Deepawali, said the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna. He said that there has been a slight increase in garbage generation on a daily basis for the past week across the city. He said that most of the garbage generated through household cleaning is dry waste and its quantity has been fluctuating daily in a range between 10 to 20 metric tonnes so far. The daily garbage generation is generally between 300-400 metric tonnes.

Most of the excess waste is generated from commercial establishments in urban areas but since most of it is dry waste, it is easier for sanitation workers to dispose of it. Khanna said that the corporation is also regularly collecting garbage from market areas during the night to ensure most of it gets disposed of as per the procedure. The workers collect about 10 metric tonnes of garbage daily during the night from commercial establishments. He said that the corporation will continue this drive during and after Deepawali to ensure the additional garbage does not lead to disrupted sanitation facilities across the city.
