With only one week left for the end of this financial year, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is gearing up to take action against those who fail to submit the property tax by March 31. There are about 1.10 lakh properties registered in the corporation and about 70,000 people have submitted the property tax this year. Since about 40,000 property owners are yet to deposit the tax, the corporation will start taking action against them from the first week of April.
The municipal tax superintendent Dharmesh Painuly informed that the tax section will start making lists of such defaulters from next week who have failed to pay taxes within the given time. They will have to pay 12 per cent interest on the amount of property tax as the penalty too which will increase with time, he added. He said that since the Geographic Information System (GIS) based mapping is also in progress across the city, it will also help the corporation to mark such property owners who have not paid taxes. He said that though the MCD has collected the property tax of about Rs 31 crore so far, it might receive a big amount from non-residential properties by March 31 as the tax of Vidhan Sabha building was also submitted recently worth Rs 50 lakh. The corporation had issued notices to about 92 governments, semi-government and aided institutions of the city in 2020 for not depositing the property tax but as per the officials, the taxes of half of these buildings are still pending which is worth about Rs 15 crore. The properties with maximum pending property tax in the city include the buildings under the Police department with about Rs 1.80 crore, SIIDCUL with Rs 1.77 crore and Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) with about Rs 90 lakh among others. The officials said that the corporations have sent reminders to such bodies and are optimistic that MCD will be able to collect Rs 40 crore this financial year.
