MCD gears up for on-field assessment under Swachh Survekshan in March

A team deployed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is scheduled to conduct an on-field assessment of Swachh Survekshan 2022 (SS22) in between March 1 and 30 considering which, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has intensified the work of promoting segregation of the garbage at source to minimise the accumulation of garbage in roadside areas and garbage stations.
The officials informed that the inspection for the seventh edition of Swachh Survekshan is scheduled to be held to check out sanitation conditions of the city. The team members also interact with locals to know about their views on sanitation conditions of the city but none of the authorities here are made aware of their presence in the city during the inspection. After the corporation attained 82nd position in SS21 with only one-star rating in Garbage-Free City (GFC) category, the officials believe they can bring the city to be in top 50 cities if it gets three or five-star rating this year. Due to this, the corporation is mainly focussing on working on the parameters of the category- door to door collection, segregation at source, waste processing capacity of wet waste and dry waste, to get the better rating. The MCD has already deployed a separate team to run campaigns and carry out other related works to improve ranking this year. The officials are also claiming to be conducting several citizen-centric campaigns in various wards on a regular basis.
The mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ and other senior officials have already started participating in awareness raising events to raise awareness about source segregation and composting at homes. MCD is also planning to establish its first Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Kargi garbage transfer station to recycle solid waste materials like leather, glass and clothes.
The senior municipal health officer of Dehradun, Dr RK Singh informed that March is an important month for the city when it comes to SS22. He said that besides the field inspection by the centre, locals will also be able to give their feedback under citizen’s feedback subcategory from March which has been delayed by two months due to Covid-19 pandemic by MoHUA.
