The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun has in April imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 each on 83 hotels and restaurants that do not dispose of their bulk waste as per the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules. These establishments include various prominent hotels and restaurants of the city that failed to submit their respective action plans of disposing the garbage despite repeated appeals and warnings of MCD, said the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna.
The corporation has been running a campaign against bulk waste generators (BWGs) since March in a phased manner in which the health section took action against nearly 90 apartment buildings and housing societies in the first phase. In the second phase, the corporation is acting against eateries and hotels. Most of the eateries are located in areas like Rajpur Road, Nehru Colony, Gandhi Road and Malsi. Some of the prominent establishments which were sent a notice are Angeethi restaurant, Negi Ji Kurkure and Chilli’z in Nehru Colony, Doon Darbar and Rajdhani Chicken Point restaurant in Gandhi Road and Black Pearl and the World Integrity Center (WIC) in Rajpur Road area.
Khanna said that the corporation has so far sent notices to a total of 115 establishments. Though none of these establishments have deposited the fine so far, MCD has received many appeals regarding preparing an action plan and following it as per the rules. The corporation is currently conducting regular inspection of such establishments and will impose a daily penalty of Rs 5,000 since the MCD issued them the first notice on the violation, added Khanna.
