The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Tuesday imposed challans amounting to Rs 1.45 lakh on four bulk waste generators (BWGs)- Centrio Mall, Hotel Hyatt, Hotel Marriot and Malsi Food Court. The municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal along with chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna and other officials conducted inspections of four prominent commercial establishments in the city.
The team first arrived at Centrio Mall and observed that the management there had collected wet and dry waste together rather than segregating it for proper disposal as per the rules. Khanna said that the team also did not find a composting unit as per the prescribed standards. The team issued a challan of Rs one lakh for non-compliance with rules and warned the management to improve conditions within a week. The team also reached Hotel Marriott and took stock of the segregation of waste which was not being done by the management.
A composting unit was built on the hotel premises to process the wet waste but was not used. Considering this, a challan of Rs 25,000 was imposed on the management with strict instructions to improve the arrangements within a week. Goyal said that the corporation was getting complaints regarding serious irregularities in waste management at Hotel Hyatt which were found to be true during the inspection.
The management had also not segregated the waste to ensure its proper disposal. The team imposed a challan of Rs 10,000 and instructed the hotel to improve the arrangements. MCD also imposed a Rs 10,000 challan on Malsi Food Court for similar violations. Khanna said that waste generated by BWGs constitutes a big portion of the waste generated across the city. The MCD teams will now conduct regular inspections to ensure these bodies dispose of their daily wet organic waste in their respective premises via the installation of bio-composting machines or action will be taken against them as per the rules.
