The Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal imposed a fine of Rs two lakh on Watergrace Company on charges of improper garbage disposal in the riverbed in the city. The penalty was imposed after a surprise inspection conducted by the commissioner in various areas under the municipal corporation’s jurisdiction on Tuesday.
Bansal said that during the inspection, large quantities of garbage were found near the Bhagat Singh Colony, the Culture department office on Raipur Road, the Chuna Bhatta area and the Yamuna Colony. She stated that it was evident that the door-to-door garbage collection vehicles are not operating regularly in these areas. Expressing strong dissatisfaction at this negligence, Bansal instructed the officials of the company responsible for door-to-door garbage collection to ensure 100 per cent compliance and improve their services immediately.
In light of the violations, a penalty of Rs two lakh was imposed on Watergrace Company, she said. The commissioner also observed municipal workers engaged in cleaning activities at Sahastradhara Road. She encouraged them to utilise the cleaning equipment provided to them, emphasising the importance of both their safety and environmental conservation. She also urged them to uphold their responsibility of maintaining cleanliness across the city. She also directed chief sanitation inspectors and supervisors to regularly provide safety equipment to the sanitation workers in their designated wards and ensure they were educated on their proper usage.
