The MCD has imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh each on Centrio Mall and Bakshi Plaza for discharging untreated wastewater into a storm water drain near Kalika Temple in Salwala area. A joint inspection was conducted on Thursday by the sub divisional magistrate, sanitation team of the corporation and Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) on the directions of Dehradun district magistate Savin Bansal in response to public complaints.

The Dehradun chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that it was found during the inspection that both establishments were contributing to contamination in the area’s drainage system. He informed that the team found that there is no Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Bakshi Plaza as per the norms and that the untreated wastewater was directly ending in the drain.

Meanwhile, although Centrio Mall’s STP was functional, the inspection revealed that contaminated water was still being discharged into the drain, as per Khanna. He stated that the team took serious note of the violations and imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each on both establishments. They were also ordered to remove the slab covering the storm water drain for thorough cleaning by the corporation.
