The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has installed global positioning system (GPS) tracking devices in 30 garbage transfer vehicles of the city. These devices were installed by a Madhya Pradesh (MP) based company at the cost of about Rs 1.50 lakh which will make it easier for the officials to track the vehicular movement and verify whether the garbage is actually being picked and being disposed of at the specified position.
The officials said that it will help the corporation to know about the real-time route of such vehicles besides ensuring the proper waste management in the city. It will also help to keep track of the fuel-related expenditure of these vehicles. According to them, the proper monitoring of such vehicles is also expected to bring down the garbage accumulation at various roadside areas across the city which continues to cause several issues to locals.
The Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said that the corporation is taking all the possible measures to improve the waste management system in Dehradun. He asserted that this is one of such initiatives expected to bring a positive outcome in waste management. He said that the MCD has decided to operate 30 garbage transfer vehicles with GPS from Monday and more such vehicles will be operated only after examining the outcome of this initiative.
